Gene Effect gets it’s first update, includes Universal support with Retina Display for the iPad 3 and TONS more!

Lightstorm3D’s first foray into iOS gaming hit the AppStore about 2 weeks ago. Since then, Gene Effect has received 4 reviews, all giving the game perfect scores. SlideToPlay also gave Gene Effect their ‘Must Have’ award. It also won 2nd place on Touch Arcade’s Game Of The Week vote, placing right under King Of Fighters 2012. Considering it was up against some other big name games from big name companies (Including Lego Harry Potter: Years 5-7, My Little Hero, Dreamworks Dragons, Brainsss, Luxor Evolved, Tractor Trails and more), it was a pretty big deal.

Lightstorm3D was fairly active on the TA Forums, as well as with gamers through e-mail, Facebook and Twitter, all the while, gathering information on what could be fixed, what players wanted, and just general suggestions. A couple hours ago the first update for Gene Effect went live, and believe me when I say – it’s one hell of an update!

Here’s what’s new in Version 1.1.0 —

New
-iPad HD resolution is now fully supported
-Added animated plasma effect to Jukebox that reacts to the music

Improvements

-Removed exit button from main menu (iOS build)
-Warp gate engine’s sound volume lowered, audibel distance increased
-Post bloom settings have been adjusted to reduce artifacts
-Mission 1: More animated spiderwebs
-Time trophy limits have been increased by 2 – 6 seconds
-Increased camera distance

-Mission 1: Fixed spiderweb causing z sorting problem
-Mission 2: Corrected floating background plants
-Mission 9: Fixed light flicker problem at scanner
-Mission 19: Fixed invisible spore plant
Now if that doesn’t get your blood pumping, I don’t know what will. Gene Effect has already found itself in the #1 spot on my Favorite Game of 2012 list, and judging by this update, will not be knocked down any time soon. It definitely brings console gaming to the iDevice, and offers up a large 8-12 hour campaign, depending on how many of the secret items, some used to upgrade your ship, you’re determined to find. After that, there’s still 4 medals and 2 awards for each of the 21 stages to try and grab, and a Hard Difficulty Mode which is unlocked after beating the game on Normal. The graphics, physics, music… everything about the game is reminiscent of a true console experience. So if you’re a hardcore gamer looking for games that push the iDevice forward in the best way, Gene Effect is definitely a title you need to check out. This first update for Gene Effect also proves that Lightstorm3D is dedicated to making Gene Effect one of the best gameplay experiences that they can. $5 for this now Universal version of the game is a steal. If you’re even remotely interested in exploration, adventure, action, arcade, or cave/mining games, GRAB GENE EFFECT NOW! If you were waiting to see if Retina Support for the new iPad was coming, you now have nothing to keep you from taking the plunge. My hats off to Lightstorm3D!
Also, the next update for Gene Effect will include grammatical fixes for all of the text in the game, so be on the look-out for that. Once that’s fixed, Gene Effect will be one of the very few perfect games available for the iOS.

Tyler’s story is continued in Clear Vision Version 1.1 – Due out early June!

FDG’s awesome sniper game, Clear Vision, tells the story of Tyler. An ordinary guy, down on his luck who decides to take up mercenary work to pay the bills, and gets a little too carried away. The game recently surpassed 1 million paid downloads, which is a huge milestone for any iOS game, and accompanying that great milestone are thousands and thousands of iTunes reviews, giving Clear Vision an average of 5 stars. Needless to say, the game is fantastic. If you don’t have it yet, you should grab it. It’s easily the most entertaining sniper game I’ve had the pleasure of playing on my PC (via the Clear Vision flash games) and iDevices. You’re able to purchase better sniper riffles, and adjust your shots depending on distance and wind speed, which is something very few sniper games take into account.

Now Tyler’s story will be continued in Version 1.1 of this awesome game, due to be released early next month (June). Since it’s an update, it will be free for everyone who’s already purchased the game. If you haven’t snagged this fantastic gem yet, and have even the slightest bit of interest in action or arcade games, you should definitely grab it and get in on the story. It’s only $0.99, and is Universal, making it a great buy… and if you’re familiar with FDG’s other releases, you’ll know the level of quality that the game will have. Check it out!

Vertex Blaster Version 2.0 Hits the AppStore!

Warner Skoch’s dual stick space shooter, Vertex Blaster just got it’s 2.0 update late last night. And you guessed it, it’s HUGE. Here’s what’s new in Version 2.0;
• Full, ultra-sharp Retina support for the new iPad!
• iCade support for iPad!
• Menu navigation via iCade/iControlPad/Joypad App!
• Portait orientation support for ipad!
• Massively improved explosion particle/explosion effects!
• New game mode! Scavenge ammo from enemies in SCAVENGER MODE!
Use the new TIME WARP special power to help you collect ammo!
• Re-tuned Meteor Shower Mode! Use the new Vortex special power to help you clear asteroids!
• Share your scores to Twitter and Facebook!
• Lots of UI improvements
• Major performance enhancements, especially on older devices
• Numerous bug fixes
• New, properly-sorted Meteor Shower Mode leaderboard
If you have yet to check out Vertex Blaster, now would be a great time. The all new Scavenger Mode is a blast to play, needing to pick up dropped ammo from destroyed enemies in order to keep on blasting away gets your heart pumping very quickly. Making it even more interesting, the Time Warp Special Ability slows everything but your ship and projectiles down. This recharging power-up does a great job of interacting with the gameplay, adding a whole new level of action as well as strategy to the Scavenger Mode. The developer has also posted up a new gameplay trailer, so be sure and check it out. If it even looks remotely interesting, you should definitely pick this up. Priced at only $0.99, being Universal, and supporting iCade, Joypad, and iControlPad, as well as the new Retina Display on the iPad3, it’s a fantastic deal!

SZC: Beyond Dead released for iPad!

Last month Monster Robot Studios released their Metroidvania title, SZC: Beyond Dead. Since it’s release, Monster Robot Studios has made quite a few major changes with the game based on player feedback, and the result is a Metroidvania title that’s immersive, engaging, and fun, though slightly hampered by the long loading times for the Map and Pause menu brought on by the game’s engine – GameSalad. Hopefully the loading issues will be fixed with the new version of GS, but even with the loading times, Beyond Dead is a nice action platformer worth checking out.
SZC: Beyond Dead got an HD iPad release yesterday, and now you can play the game in native resolution on the ‘big screen’. The changes brought on since Version 1.0 have been included, making it easy to control, but on the iPad, the game plays in Portrait Mode, which might sound weird for a platformer, but once you start it up, and see the HUD layout, you’ll see why making the game play in Portrait Mode was such a great idea.
The Map and pause menu items, like switching weapons, and viewing your mission objectives, take up the top half of the screen, while the lower half of the screen is set up like the game is on the iPhone. So the iPad version is not hampered by the long loading times to check out the map or pause menu, which is a HUGE plus. If you’ve got an iPad, the HD version of Beyond Dead is definitely a Metroidvania title you should check out.

SZC: Beyond Dead – Update + Promo Codes!

SZC: BEYOND DEAD
Last month, Monster Robot Studios released their Metroid inspired action platformer, SZC: Beyond Dead. It got mixed reviews, but one of the biggest issues gamers seemed to have with the game was the controls.
Since then, MRS has done some major re-working, and this morning, Version 1.0.1 of Beyond Dead hit the AppStore. And it makes a huge difference in the gameplay.
Here’s what’s included in the 1.0.1 Update;
Duel Joysticks – You can now aim in all directions, enabling you to run one way while shooting in another.

1 Hit Kill Shots for Level 1 Zombies. This lets you clear out groups of enemies fairly quickly, instead of needing to run away from them while pumping round after round into the group.

The camera moves more smoothly, improved loading times, and other small fixes have also been added. Not to mention, the awesome new icon!
With this update, players can now make their way through the First Episode of Beyond Dead without getting too frustrated. The loading times for the Map and Pause Menu are still kind of long, and in a game like this, it’s essential that bringing up the map is quick and easy. Hopefully when GameSalad updates its engine in the next couple months, it will fix these loading times significantly. But at least you can make it through the game without struggling with the controls.
It’s very clear that Monster Robot Studios is committed to making Beyond Dead the most enjoyable experience they can, listening to player’s feedback, and optimizing the game as much as possible given their tools. Granted, it will probably never be seen as the essential Metroid like game for the iOS, but it’s definitely one that’s worth getting if you’re a fan of the Metroidvania genre.
As long as we’re on the subject of getting the game – Monster Robot Studios has been kind enough to give us 5 Promo Codes for Beyond Dead.
K46J46L7AM3L

There’s also a contest going on in the Touch Arcade Forums, if you weren’t lucky enough to snag one of the 5 codes listed, where you can try and come up with a name for one of the bosses in Beyond Dead and win a Promo Code for the game. If you get one, you can also write up a review for the game in iTunes, and have a chance to win a $10 iTunes Gift Card! Check it out here –

More December Updates, Freebies, and Sales along with news about Wizard Ops!

Alrighty, to start things off today, I got an e-mail from Justin, a developer of Wizard Ops, a 3rd person rail shooter, letting me know about their up-coming update, and it’s a fairly big one.
Version 1.2 will include one new level, “Deep Woods” in which you’ll search and destroy the deadly contraptions created by the factory, three, that’s right, THREE difficulty modes, with Easy being the original difficulty, being able to take 10 hits before you die, and having unlimited respawns. Medium difficulty; you can take 3 hits before you die, and you only get 5 respawns, and Hard difficulty; One shot kills you and you only get 3 respawns. So those of you who thought that Wizard Ops was a bit too easy, get ready to get your bullet dodging game on! There’s also going to be three new leaderboards for each level, split up between the three difficulties. The leaderboards that are already included in Version 1.1 will stay the same, but be renamed “Easy”. They have also included GameCenter Achievements, 10 of them, and have plans on adding more in the future.
They were also kind enough to send over a screenshot of the new level, lookin mighty nice if you ask me;
If you haven’t picked up Wizard Ops yet, we highly recommend that you do. This update is… well… FRIGGIN AWESOME! If you’d like to find out more about the game, you can head over to our review, and see just what the game has in store for you, or you can go head and check out the developer’s website, there’s quite a bit of info and content there, so even if you read our review, you might want to check out the site anyway.
The Version 1.2 update has already been submitted, and is waiting for approval from Apple. We’ll be posting when the update goes live, as usual, so check back, or keep an eye on your update notifications, because it should hit the store soon.
You can download Wizard Ops from the iTunes store by clicking here;

The game will also autosave when you exit from a battle to the Main Menu. The Continue button in the Main Menu will continue the last autosaved game. The speed of the splash animations (during combat) is now adjustable in the Options menu. The splash animations can also be turned off, such that only damage and buff/debuff effects will be denoted after each combat instance.UI Changes When the terrain grid is visible, it will clearly indicate all tiles which the player’s own Elements have been commanded to occupy due to Move and Wheeling commands. When an AI-controlled Formation is selected, a new toggle is now available to switch between either displaying their movement range or displaying their attack range; the attack range will show the maximum threshold for attacking without moving, as well as attacking after a move.Gameplay Changes Players may now give an order to Move an Element or Formation into tiles either already occupied or blocked by their own units.Bug Fixes and Optimizations Fixed an issue where the information panel for AI-controlled units would sometimes not display. Fixed the radial menu scale not being updated properly when centering on a unit from a zoom that is larger than the default. Fixed dialogue errors in the cutscenes for Ravenhood mission 5, and the bug where the characters were assigned incorrect dialogue at the end of Ravenhood mission 6. In Ravenhood missions 4 and 5, certain buildings will no longer be erroneously drawn on top of units at certain locations. More aggressively reduce memory usage and increase FPS across the game.

**We should also mention that Ravenmark’s price will go up with every major content update from here on out. So if you’re interested in the game, now would be the BEST time to snag it!**

Even MORE platformer Updates, and – you guessed it – more freebies!

Ezone.com’s platform runner, Diversion, has gone through loads of updates since it’s release. It’s latest one adds even more to the already content full title. Version 1.35 brings new holiday snow themed menus and unlockable daily characters, adds levels 11-20 in World 5, more endless bonus levels, bringing the total up to 35, new characters, bringing the total to more than 600, hammer smack bosses, ice, micro boost pickups, and loads of fixes! If you haven’t picked this one up yet, you really should. Ezone.com has supported it like crazy, adding content pretty much every month. There’s TONS of gameplay, and, yeah, over 600 characters!!
Wicked Games exploratory spy platformer, SpyCorp, has had quite a few updates since it’s release as well. After taking out all of the IAPs to show complaining gamers that they were not needed to complete the game, they got a load of suggestions and feedback. Version 1.2.1 contains added HD textures for iPhone 4, iPhone 4S iPad 2 and 4th gen iPods, a button for the briefing screen to return to the level selection menu, improved some dialogue, level design tweaks and updates, as well as loads of bug fixes like GameCenter leaderboard connections, a bug fix for the operation 2 boss fight, cases where stealth would remain after a moving shadow passed off of the player, and more. Wicked Games is definitely a development group that I have to highly respect, and for $0.99, it’s hard to beat the amount of content you’ll find in SpyCorp. 50 levels, loads of them taking 15-20 minutes to complete. It’s a platformer you will not regret purchasing.
After being removed from the AppStore to fix a major bug that was included in the last update, One Minute Games speedrunner, Commander Pixman, is back, and better than ever! Version 1.2.1 has fixed possible ‘static’ monsters on replays, improved collision detection, improved GameCenter logging, a ‘Skip’ level button has been added, and 10 new levels have been included in the ‘First Blood’ level pack, which is included in the game for free. Commander Pixman is definitely a speedrunner that stands tall on it’s own two feet, respectably holding it’s own against the likes of League Of Evil, Mos Speedrun, Meganoid, and Stardash. FDG Entertainment’s 3D Motion Puzzler, Blueprint 3D, has just received it’s first update. Version 1.1 includes an all new Christmas level pack, 2 new game modes: Advanced and Pro, a new trophy, new achievements and a new leaderboard, progress is saved in each level, and some minor bug fixes. If you haven’t bought this one yet, you really should. It might not seem like something too great, but once you start playing it, it’s incredibly hard to put down.

Updates galore!! Platformer’s paradise!

Chocolate Liberation Front’s amazingly atmospheric platformer, published (surprisingly) by MTV Networks, Oscura, has just received a highly anticipated content update. It includes the 5 levels that were locked out of Version 1.0, which are, simply put, amazingly well put together. The new objects and level designs expand quite a bit on the first half of the game, and if you thought that what was included in Version 1.0 was great, just wait until you see what has been added. On top of the new levels, the controls have been improved, making it easier to change direction while in the air, as well as the addition of virtual controls! Fans of the game will end up loving it even more. If you’re a platformer fan, and do not have Oscura yet, GET IT! It’s one of the most, if not THE MOST, atmospheric platformers available in the AppStore.
Studi Yomi’s tilt controlled platformer, Tero, has also just gotten an awesome update that gamers have been waiting for for quite some time. This 1.1 Version of Tero features, you guessed it, virtual controls. No more tilting and swiping to control Tero, now you can run through this fabulous game with virtual buttons, and it is fabulous. Players who have bought the game before now might not have played through enough levels to actually see how great this platformer is, but in an AppStore being overrun with speedrunners and small leveled platformers, Tero definitely stands out, having quite a bit of exploration involved, and all in a beautifully crafted world. If you don’t have this one yet, now would be the perfect time to get it.
OrangePixel’s first real iOS platformer, Meganoid, has gone through quite a few updates in the past, but none quite as monumental as this 1.6.0 Version. The game is now complete with the last of the 300 total levels added! Those of you who have been waiting for the end of the game now have it, and oh, how sweet it is! On top of finalizing the game, OrangePixel has added a “skip” option, a new intro screen, awesome scanline graphics mode (optional) which totally brings the retro visuals to full old TV circle, a huge MEGANOID achievement for 100% completing the game, improved menu screens, an added percentage-completed counter, a fixed bug in level 30, device-rotation, and some bug fixes with music and sound, essentially finalizing everything in the game that needed to be fixed and completed. It’s a wonderful day for Meganoid fans, but I can’t help but feel a little sad knowing that the adventure is finally over.
Lost Pixel’s retro-platformer, Frogatto, is another in the list of platformer updates tonight, and it’s another huge one! This 1.2 Version includes a complete redo of attack logic; Frogatto is now free to walk around while he attacks, and in general is much more responsive, as well as having a much more forgiving tongue-grabbing mechanic. A complete rewrite of damage handling has been done making it much more consistant, and eliminated some bugs where damage wouldn’t get dealt. Tilesets have been reworked, enhancements to dungeon wall graphics, more readable fonts, loads of graphical tweaks, maps are now strewn with spittable props within easy reach, almost all of the dialogue has been rewrote, collectible items like coins and hearts and be collected by touching them with Frogatto’s tongue, an entire redraw of the world map, new monsters, bats now behave differently, and loads of bug fixes. If all of that is not a good enough reason to re-install one of the best platformers on the iOS, I don’t know what is.
Our last update isn’t a very big one, but the changes that have been done have added a ton to the gameplay. Uncade’s endless platform runner, Haunted Hallway, has just gone through quite a change. Version 1.2 brings about 24 all new challenge levels, with badges for collecting 3 diamonds, all the coins, and beating the levels time-limit. A whole new main menu, GameCenter achievements, a new Icon, graphical enhancements, and bug fixing. Uncade’s support of Haunted Hallway, giving players pretty much everything they’ve asked for, is incredible. It’s work like this that deserves loads of support from iOS gamers.
In fact, every single game on here has had quite a bit of support from it’s developers, and The App Shack would like to send out a HUGE THANK YOU to all of them for sticking with it in a store that’s so full of unresponsive publishers and devs, paid games going free and getting iAds, and everything else that’s happening to games in the AppStore when they don’t sell like the developers think they should. It’s developers like this that make the AppStore such an amazing place, and we want them to know that we do not take their work for granted, by any means. Again, THANK YOU!! Now go support these guys! You know you want to. =oD
