Flip Riders, Haunted Hallway and Finger Gravity updates!

Flip Riders, the 2D side-scrolling racer from Agimat (developers of Shadow Candy: Sugar Rush), has just gotten it’s first major update, and it’s a doozy! Included in the update; Checkpoints! No more complete restarts when you crash. This has been a fairly common request on the Touch Arcade Forums, so it’s great to see that it’s been included, and should make the game more accessible to casual gamers. There’s also 4 new worlds with 20 new levels, all made for casual and beginning players, making the game even more accessible to casual gamers. A 3rd control option, Left and Right buttons, and a new camera view for when your rider is high up in the air, so that you can see what you’re going to be thrown into when you land. There’s also another major update coming within the next week, so if you don’t have this great game yet, now would be an awesome time to start getting into it.
Haunted Hallway, the endless runner with platformer controls developed by Uncade, has just received it’s first big update, including GameCenter leaderobards for high-score and for distance, more emeralds and rubies, added distance to the results screen, and changed it up with more level variety. Addressing a lot of issues that gamers were talking about, Haunted Hallway is now better than ever. More replay value, more variety, and higher scores give it that extra little oomph that was missing in version 1.0. Make sure you check out the new and improved Haunted Hallway!
Finger Gravity, a gravity based physics puzzler, developed by Wode Mobile, has also just gotten it’s first big update. It includes 21 new mind-bending levels for you to try and make your way through. Hopefully, the added content will help get this game more attention, because it really does deserve it, as it’s one of the few physics puzzlers we here at The App Shack have been able to stick with, and feel that the gameplay and mechanics make it stick out in an AppStore flooded with physics puzzlers. Be sure to snag this one if you don’t have it yet, you won’t regret it.

Gyro13 FREERIDE and a HUGE Commander Pixman Update!

Gyro13, one of our favorite games of 2011, has just released a lite version with one extremely well designed level. I know, it doesn’t sound like much, but it definitely shows off the graphics, gameplay, physics, controls, and music that can be found in the (now on sale) full version. It also contains two GameCenter leaderboards for the one level, which does add at least a little bit of replay value, seeing how well you stack up against the rest of the world in time and score. If you don’t have the full version yet, and are still wondering whether you should pick it up or not, now you can check out the Freeride version, and come to a final decision.

Commander Pixman, a space based speed run platformer with interesting physics, has just gone through a huge update. The game is now supported by GameCenter with leaderboards and achievements, 45 new levels and 5 new missions, bringing the total levels to 125. The new lite version level pack, First Blood, has been included, the timer now starts after you make your first move (disabled by default), and various fixes and improvements. This update comes right after the release of the FREE version of Commander Pixman, which features a whole level pack. Players who already have the game are in for a treat, and those of you who don’t have it, now would be a great time to get it.

Alphadia Correction

Review sites are not very well known for saying that they got something wrong. But at The App Shack, we believe that you, our readers, deserve to know when we’ve made a mistake, and what a game is really like. Yesterday I posted up a review for Alphadia, by Kemco, the same developers of the amazing turn-based RPG, Symphony Of Eternity. In that review I said this;
“The only bad thing I can say about Alphadia is that the battle results screen sometimes feels like it’s getting in the way of the game. It doesn’t matter how quickly or how much you tap on the screen, the battle result screen has a set time that it’s shown.”
Then, while playing Alphadia last night, I started to tap quicker, and on the right side of the screen at the battle results screen. This made the results screen vanish into the past very quickly. Apparently, I wasn’t tapping quick enough, or was tapping on the wrong side of the screen, as it seems that the results screen doesn’t fade away as quickly if you’re tapping quickly on the left side of the screen. Anyway, the main point of this announcement is to say that I didn’t tap quick enough to make the results screen go away quickly, and then posted in my review, WRONGLY posted in my review, that the results screen could not be pushed aside “no matter how quickly or how much you tap on the screen” – which is outright wrong. This is also the main reason Alphadia got a score of 9 out of 10, because I felt that it took you out of the game for a long enough time that it made the gameplay feel not as smooth as it should, and it got a bit frustrating waiting for the results screen to go away before getting back into the action. So, I’m going to change (for the first time EVER!) the Alphadia score from 9/10 to a perfect 10/10, which is very much what it deserves, and would like to apologize to the Kemco, Kotobuki Solution developers and publishers, as well as our readers, for the mis-understanding.

Squids gets a content update!

The Game Bakers latest title, Squids, has gotten tons of great reception from gamers. Here at The App Shack, it’s one of the few games that has gotten a perfect 10 out of 10 score. To our surprise, we woke up this morning, and saw that an update had gone out for this title, and it’s one that’s definitely worth checking out!
New in Version 1.2.1 –
–New Halloween Level.
–8 New Helmets.
–Bug fix with pearls in App Purchase when offline.
–Mission 6 always unlocks after mission 5.
–Better visualization of items in shop.
–Bug fix for “All stars” achievement.
What we’re really excited about is the new level and helmets. If you’ve been waiting for new content, here it is. A big thank you to The Game Bakers, and if you haven’t checked out Squids yet, it’s an amazing casual action turn-based RPG game where you fling your characters into enemies to do damage. Each hat you equip transfers it’s powers over to you, so once you have a hat, you have it’s powers. It’s definitely a game you’ve got to check out. If you’ve already got Squids, make sure to grab this update, and check out the new content.

LightGuardian Update 1.1

One of our favorite games of the year, LightGuardian, by Lukas Penkava, has just had it’s first update, and it’s a doozy! To start things off, a new enemy has been added – the Sailboat. This new enemy distracts by circling around your lighthouse getting closer and closer with each passing second. To take it out, you’ll need to focus your light on the body of the boat while it’s moving, but luckily, it’s destroyed almost instantly. Along with this new enemy, Mr. Penkava has added two difficulty modes, Normal, and Hard. On Normal, each of the enemies will have a radar detector above them, showing the player if they are in the green, yellow, or red areas of the radar. This should help those of you who thought that the addition of a radar without dots was kind of mute, as now you can still experience the main focus of the game (searching around your lighthouse, taking note of where enemies are, and killing them based on their threat), while knowing exactly how close enemies are, and which ones are setting off your radar color changes. Hard Mode takes this away, making it a mode that’s more like how the 1.0 version of the game was, and in addition to no radar detectors above the enemies, the amount of enemies spawned is higher, getting you into the action quite a bit quicker than on Normal Mode. To make things even more interesting, a shop with upgrades has been added. Now you can not only upgrade your lighthouse light strength, but how quickly you’re bomb and light ray’s are activated, for how long your ray lasts, and how strong your bomb can become. Once you fully upgrade your bomb, it will be able to take out enemies not only in the red radar area, but the yellow as well, and be charged quicker, while your light ray will last for a full 10 seconds longer, and also be charged quicker. The tutorial has also been updated, bugs have been squashed, and there’s a nice shiny new icon as well. Be sure to check out the updated trailer, and get this hidden gem for $1.99 in the AppStore today!

Infinite Dreams says “Thank You” with Ads…

Jelly Defense developer, Infinite Dreams, has just updated their Angry Birds/Tiny Wings mesh – Shoot The Birds, with “Small Improvements” and adding “A huge THANK YOU to all you Shoot the Birds fans for great support. You are the best! Your 5-star iTunes ratings and reviews keep us motivated to provide you new content with future updates! Thank you for playing Shoot The Birds.”

Come to find out, those “Small Improvements” were the addition of iAds, and price drop from $1.99 to free, making previous customers who have paid for the game kind of think, “if you’re going to say thank you with iAds, next time, keep it to yourself.” This is happening more and more with games that do not live up to “early sales quotas” or don’t do as well as developers thought they would. But with a development company like Infinite Dreams having more than a few games available in the AppStore, each of which having more than just a few iTunes reviews, as well as reviews from all over the net, it’s hard to believe that they really need to pull something like this to earn that 2 cents for every accidental click on an ad. I guess the question you should be asking yourselves is; “if a development company says ‘thank you’ to their supportive customers by throwing ads into a game those customers have paid for, is this really a development company you want to support in the future?”
**Note** Infinite Dreams responded. saying “It’s free, what do you expect?”

Squirmee And The Puzzling Tree Gets An Update + Becomes Squirmee REDUX

Earlier this year, what has become one of our favorite puzzlers hit the AppStore, and it went by the name of Squirmee And The Puzzling Tree. It was a difficult puzzler that scratched every itch in our little game obsessed minds. However, as is pretty common these days with games in the AppStore, Squirmee did not sell well at all, and people were pretty upset by the difficulty of the game, even though you were able to skip every level that frustrated you. Lavafish Studio tried a couple of things to try and make it better, easing up on the 3 star times, re-doing the tutorial, all the while adding more and more content to the game. Nothing seemed to work for them though, so they decided to do something almost un-heard of with iOS game developers. They re-built Squirmee from the ground up, making all 75 levels easier, as well as tweaking other aspects of the game to make it more accessible to the casual iOS gamer, which, in turn, actually ended up making Squirmee a whole hell of a lot more fun.
Now, instead of challenging or maybe frustrating the player, Squirmee is a casual puzzler that is, while still challenging, more of a game that you can play to relax and experience. If you already have Squirmee, the update has gone live, and chances are, you might want to re-play the whole game. If you loved Squirmee the way it was, you might want to back-up a copy on your PC, or on another device before updating, so that if you feel the game has become too easy, you can delete it, and re-install the previous version. But it’s pretty safe to say that LavaFish, with the amount of work they’ve done on making Squirmee fun and entertaining for as many gamers as possible, deserves a second chance if you didn’t like Squirmee the first time around, and even more support if you’re already a fan. A HUGE thank you to LavaFish, for sticking with it, and not pulling the game, adding ads to the game, or just forgetting about the game because of low sales. Persistence like that is something that, these days, should definitely be supported, and praised.

Update for Updates!

We’ve fallen a little bit behind in keeping up with updates for games that we here at The App Shack have reviewed, and we’re very, very sorry about that. But we promise that no more will we slack off when it comes to keeping our readers updated about the games we’ve reviewed and come to love.

So here we go;
Snorbies (Nepik);

This match 3+ bubble popper that we reviewed back in August, has just gotten a pretty nice update, addressing a couple of the issues we brought up while reviewing. For starters, the game now has music. Nice, relaxing downtempo beats and soothing synth-lines will accompany you in your quest to clear out all the Snorbies level after level. No more hearing only the beeps of Snorbies hitting eachother. To make it even more interesting, Nepik has included in-game high-score leaderboards for each Mode, along with boards for most Snorbies woken up, Snorbies lumped together, and your single shot record. These are not split up by difficulty, so there’s a chance that someone playing the game on easy could hold the number 1 position over someone playing the game on extreme. We don’t know if that appeals to you, but we think it’s great that all players are getting lumped together regardless of what skill level they are to compete for high-scores. Nepik has also made a more appealing icon, showing the cute blue Snorbie in a not so cute way. Oooo, scary!
The Adventures Of Timmy: Run Kitty Run (CB Labs);

This awesome platformer than hit the AppStore last month has gotten a performance and bug squashing update in preparation for their next update, which will add a new control scheme, VIRTUAL BUTTONS! But for now, they made Timmy run a lot smoother, and made it iOS 5 compatible. With the bug fixes (most of which, we didn’t even catch in our review), multitasking has been fixed, and you can now accept calls when playing, and then jump right back into the action after you’re done chatting away, as well as some camera issues being fixed. Apparently the camera shoot a bit for some players, and this has been completely taken care of. Along with these fixes, CB Labs has made the game run smoother on all devices. The developers are now also active on the Touch Arcade thread, and working with players to try and make the game 2G compatible, as well as taking suggestions for future improvements. They’ve also shared their support e-mail with everyone, asking that if you have any issues, questions, or complaints, to e-mail them at support@theadventuresoftimmy.com , and it’s always nice to see a development company become active in forums, and through e-mail. So you can expect The Adventures Of Timmy to only get better as time goes on.
Edge Extended (Mobigame);

One of the best puzzle games in the AppStore, Edge Extended, has just recently gotten an update giving it 4 new levels. This isn’t really a HUGE update, but it’s still a very welcome one, and in the end, when Mobigame has slowly added 4 levels here, 2 levels there, 3 levels here, you can be sure that the game will almost feel like it’s original 1.0 version was just the frame of the Edge Extended household.
Bloo Kid (Eiswuxe);

Bloo Kid, a single screen platformer released earlier this year, has just gotten an update brining OpenFeint support into the mix. You can now compete with other platformer freaks around the globe for the most number of stars collected. This addition brings a whole new level of replay value to the game, as online features usually do, and we couldn’t be more happy about it. Also in the update, various bug fixes, making Bloo Kid run smoother, and play better. Thank you Eiswuxe!
Supergay (Klicrainbow);

One of our favorite politically incorrect games, Supergay, has just gotten an update including 6 new levels. You can now go through and play 6 more minigames, leading Tom just a little further down the road of scientific and personal realization, bringing the game one more step closer to completion.

Ruffled: Feathers Rising gets a new control feature!

The bird game that has you pooping on people has just got a pretty nice update! You can now control your bird with, are you ready for this?, TILT CONTROLS! It’s something the gamers, and the game itself, have been begging for since the release of Ruffled, back in July. No more swiping un-precisely to try and get your poo to land on the different objects in each level, and no more getting frustrated at just missing those pick-ups because you had to pick your finger up to swipe some more… now the game flows, and it’s a huge improvement. Also added to the game – A new tutorial. This new tutorial gives you all the information you’ll need in order to successfully land poop on everything in the game. It’s also placed as a main button on the main menu, so you shouldn’t have any trouble at all finding it this time around. To top it all off, it also got a nifty new icon! Those of you who had the game will probably fall in love with it all over again, and those of you who haven’t heard of Ruffled, or just haven’t checked it out yet, now would be a great time. Though it’s still missing out on GameCenter (Hopefully we’ll see that added in a shorter amount of time than it took to implement the tilt controls – but the devs are working on the game! And it’s kind of hard to ask for more).
