Space Tripper gets a HUGE update, Mirrors Edge goes free, EPOCH. price drop, Agimat supporters are pretty upset… and more

–=UPDATES=–
True Axis and PomPom Games amazing game, Space Tripper, just got it’s first update last night, and it’s what a lot of customers and potential customers have been asking for. RELATIVE TOUCH controls have been added, as well as an Easy Mode and auto tilt-calibration. Fans of the tilt controls need not worry though, because the time and practice that you’ve put into the game is required for the touch controls as well. It will take some time to get use to them. But they’re there, and perfectly done. So everyone who has been waiting for touch controls can now dive in, and enjoy one of the greatest games of the year. To make it even better, those of you who have been having a hard time getting through the game on Normal Mode, can now play on Easy Difficulty, and hopefully see what all the fuss is about. If you don’t have Space Tripper yet, you NEED to get this game. It’s got to be the best arcade title I’ve played on my iDevice in a long, long time.
Agimat’s side scrolling kart racer, Flip Riders, was pulled from the AppStore not too long ago. After one of Agimat’s developers was saying over and over again in the Touch Arcade thread for the game that “More great stuff is coming real soon!“, “It’ll only get better from here on out” and “Flip Riders is going through some interesting changes” it has now been re-released in the AppStore under a different publisher, Bad Juju Games. Instead of adding it to the AppStore under the same application, it’s now a separate game, meaning that those of us who purchased Flip Riders will not be getting support for the app from now on. The new version of Flip Riders is a freemium title. Yup, that’s right. Now instead of the original 10 riders you could unlock in-game, you’re given 2 riders, and 3 that you can buy through an in app purchase. Looks like when Agimat said “It’ll only get better from here on out” they meant only get better for them, not their supporters, who are, you guessed it, extremely upset. Needless to say, they’ve lost a lot of their supporters, and will probably have a fairly hard time selling their next title, that is, if they decide to release another title in the AppStore.
To lighten the mood, thankfully there are still developers giving us AWESOME updates. Mountain Sheep, developers of the Flip Riders counterpart, Bike Baron, have just released their 1.3 update. What’s new this time around? A new game mode with Domovoi Biker that has more checkpoints, has an easier difficulty, and an all new leaderboard! Along with the new mode, 22 “best of the best” USER CREATED levels have been added to each of the difficulty levels – 12 new easy levels, 5 new medium levels, 3 new hard levels and 2 new extreme levels! A retry from beginning button has been added, more sound effects, more controls for sounds, all levels now feature additional Domovoi checkpoints only visible and usable by him, and various fixes in level flow and structure. To sum it up? Bike Baron feels almost like a completely new game. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you definitely should.

The Cubes are coming… for the holidays.
Play three free holiday-themed levels of Cubes Vs. Spheres, the critically acclaimed 3D physics action game where you defend against waves of advancing Cubes by flicking powerful Spheres at them. Use 6 unique Spheres to explode, freeze, squash and confuse the Cubes. Can you survive the Cube apocalypse?

Cubes Vs. Spheres gets an AWESOME update and Wizard Ops first update goes live!

ShockPanda Games amazing 3D base defense title, Cubes Vs. Spheres had it’s most recent update go live in the middle of the night, and all we can say about it? HOLY FRIGGIN CRAP! Not only did ShockPanda give us an awesome Survival Mode, but they gave us 3 different Survival Mode levels, 10 more levels, this time on Insane Difficulty, new Fire Cubes, Shield Cubes, Gravity Cubes, and a ‘couple surprises’, new obstacles and mechanics like portals, meteors, and dance pads, 4 new achievements, new leaderboards and more! Now developers who might be reading this, take note – THIS is what you call an update! The Survival Mode is absent of the regular scoring system, being replaced by scoring players on how many cubes they destroy. This might turn some players off, as those of us who group cubes together, take risks, and actually play with strategy to build up HUGE combos are not rewarded for it, and players who just toss spheres into the crowed at a constant rate will end up scoring the same. Though it might bring more players in to Survival Mode because of that fact. But in the end, it’s almost downright impossible to complain about more gameplay content in one of the best games of the year, especially endless gameplay content. With the Insane Levels, the old strategy of tossing a Heart Cube into the crowd of cubes and then just bombarding them with Fire Spheres when they’re grouped together doesn’t really work anymore. You’ll need to come up with some new gameplay methods to get through these levels. Insane is exactly the correct word for these stages, so get ready to have sweaty palms, a racing heart, and want to bash your head against the wall, while loving every second of it. The new cubes are a fantastic addition to the game as well, really mixing things up with the Shield Cubes that block your spheres right before they leave your base area, taking these guys out will take patience and complete awareness of what other cubes are close to you. And the Portals. PORTALS!?!? The perfect addition to a game that’s fairly graphically close to Portal. Everything about this update justifies how long it took for ShockPanda to get it to us, and with the price remaining at just $0.99 for this Universal game, you’d have to hate video games not to buy it.
Wizard Ops, Phyken’s 3rd Person Rails Shooter, has just been updated as well. This first update brings gamers GameCenter Support, a new mission, iCade Support, and bug fixes. GameCenter was easily one of the most requested features for this arcade type high-scoring game, so it’s great that it was added in this first update. The new mission, Helicopter Factory, boosts the difficulty of the regular campaign quite a bit, and not like the Survival level is difficult because there’s no health pick-ups, but the enemies are mixed up well, there’s a couple new enemies, new projectile mechanics, and includes a boss type battle at the end of the stage. It also feels slightly longer than the previous campaign levels. Hopefully this is a sign that the future levels will keep increasing in difficulty, making the game more balanced and fleshed out. This update does start the reputation of Phyken as a very responsive development team who works quickly to address issues, and add reasonable features that players are asking for, as well as adding on to it. If this truly is a sign of things to come from Phyken, they shouldn’t have any problems gaining a solid fan-base that will grow with (hopefully) each future release they might bring to the iOS.

EPOCH., Blue Libra and Fearless Ninja Updates!

–=UPDATES=–
Uppercut Games amazing Unreal powered cover-based arcade shooter, EPOCH. has just received a great update. This time around, Uppercut has fixed a bunch of crashing issues, optimized performance on lower memory devices, fixed an intercept that wasn’t unlocking, and fixed a third tier health regen armor item that wasn’t working properly. This update allows for smoother performance on all devices, with all iOS versions. So those of you who were experiencing crashes on iOS 5.0.1, or just couldn’t play because of some bad lag or jitters, now you can fully experience this amazing game. If you haven’t bought EPOCH. yet, check out our review and see if it’s something you’d enjoy!
Blue Libra, the Sci-Fi/RTS title from Orator Games just got an update today as well. Sadly, this one isn’t something to be too happy about. Orator Games has added the ‘reward’ service, Kiip to this great game. Now you’ll be bombarded with Kiip banners while you play telling you that you could win a special ‘REAL LIFE PRIZE!’… if you go to their site and register and are picked to win a special prize. These Kiip ‘rewards’, that are more like ads, are starting to pick up ground in the indie-development department. Blue Libra is the third title to implement these ads to their games, and hopefully, games with the Kiip ‘rewards’ will go straight downhill so that developers are not temped to throw the ads into their games. Oh yeah, Mission 9 had some difficulty tweaks, and the selecting a ship while zoomed out was also tweaked… yay.
To end our updates update on a good note, the Box Shaped Games title, Fearless Ninja, has gotten it’s first update, and it’s a fairly nice one. More levels have been added, and the gameplay has been improved. The gameplay feels tighter, and more fluid. So if you haven’t checked out this great arcade title, there’s no time like the present.
–=FREEBIES=–
CB Labs awesome exploritory platformer, The Adventures of Timmy: Run Kitty Run, has recently gone free for a limited time. This is easily one of the best platformers I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing on the iOS, and with the recent addition of virtual buttons instead of a floating joystick, the game is now a lot easier to play. If you’re a fan of platform games, DO NOT miss this one. It’s a game that’ll stick with you for some time to come.
Triniti Interactive’s latest release, Call Of Mini: Double Shot, is our last freebie mention of the day. In this dual-stick shoot-em-up, you’ll run around arena type levels killing as many zombies as you can. However, it’s a lot like Glu’s Gun Bros in that there’s another character helping you out. Though he’s not generally too smart, and will usually stand there while zombies attack him, he is good for taking the heat off of you for a second. If you’re a fan of dual-stick shooters, Call of Mini: Double Shot doesn’t really bring anything new to the table, but in typical Triniti Interactive fashion, it is polished, and full of IAPs, so the only way to really enjoy it is to get it while it’s free, play it for a little bit, reminisce about the games they’ve ripped off with this latest title, and then delete it. Fun-fun!

Squids goes Universal, Crimson: Steam Pirates goes FREE, and more!

–=UPDATES=–
Since the turn-based RPG, Squids, by The Game Bakers, was released, gamers have been begging for a HD iPad version of the beautiful game. Now, instead of releasing a separate build for the iPad, The Game Bakers decided to update the iPhone version, and make it UNIVERSAL. That’s right, now, you can install that original iPhone copy that you bought onto your iPad, and view the game in all of it’s amazing graphical glory, and it’s not going to cost you one penny extra! Adding to this already HUGE update, a new mission for the Halloween map has been added, Localization in Japanese, Chinese and Russian, Pearls are now won wether you win or loose a stage, you can now listen to your own music while playing, the screen rotation has been fixed, and a couple of bugs have been squashed! Now THAT, my friends, is what you can call a MASSIVE update! If you haven’t picked this one up yet, we HIGHLY recommend that you do. It’s an awesome gameplay experience that you won’t soon forget.
Quarter Circle Punch’s recent shoot-em-up, Wonton 51, had quite a few mixed reviews. On one hand, simply put, the game is friggin awesome. On the other hand, the controls didn’t really let you experience the game how you’d want to experience it. A new game type with Auto-fire has been added, with rebalanced gameplay, and a totally separate leaderboard! Also added to the game; a new boss type with a new attack, showing up in both modes, and some fixes for iOS5 and Twitter compatibility, along with some bug fixes. So if you ended up throwing your iPod against a wall while playing Wonton 51 the first time around, now would be a great time to take a crack at it again. With the Auto-Fire mode, the game feels a lot more like a shmup, and a lot less like a game that’s being hidden under your fingers.
OrangePixel’s GameBoy inspired platformer, Stardash, has also received an update, this time bringing gamers a whole new world with 10 great levels, a few bug fixes, and a device rotation fix! Stardash is easily one of our favorite platformers of the year, so if you haven’t checked it out yet, you really should, especially if you grew up with an original GameBoy.

New Updates & A Developer Goes NUTZ-O

Yateland’s physics based puzzle game, Rejoin, has just been updated to include GameCenter, and has an all new scoring system! If you had the chance to read our review of this nice puzzler, you might remember that the lack of GameCenter, and lack of any scoring system were two big things we said would be great to have within the game, and here they are, adding quite a bit of replay value as well as added challenge to the game. Now’s a great time to get your hands on this interesting puzzle game.
iniGames latest shmup, Space Ship Ion, has just received it’s second update, getting one new level, along with a new boss! Definitely nice when shmups add new content, especially when it comes with a new boss.
Orange Pixel’s newest addition to the retro platformer genre, INC, has gone through it’s second update. This time, they’ve done more than bug fixing! Now, you can change the position of the virtual buttons. On the Touch Arcade thread, this was a pretty big deal for a lot of people, especially those playing the game on an iPad. The landscape rotation was also fixed, as well as moving the pause button to the top of the screen, and of course, some bug fixing with the touch input on the level select screens. For those of you who were waiting for some changeable controls, now would be the time to pick up this gem.
Bonpeach, the developer of the fantastic arcade game, Explodables, where you tap on rockets in a certain order to get bonus items and score HUGE points, has just updated this great game with an all new ENDLESS MODE, as well as adding a new Rainbow Frenzy, and streamlining the tutorial into the Endless Mode (which you can turn off in the options). Now the game is easier to understand, and more fun to play. Be sure to check out our Twitter page, in the near near future, for info on how you can snag an Explodables Promo Code!

HotGen’s two titles, Spacelings, and the ever so popular To-Fu: The Trials of Chi, recently had their Free Ad-filled versions pulled from the AppStore. You might be asking yourself why? Well if you’ve updated already, you know the answer, and chances are, you’re not too happy about it.
Spacelings and To-Fu, both paid versions, have been made FREE and have had ADs thrown into them. Not only were ads thrown into both paid versions of these games, but the developers decided to hide the fact by saying that the update was for “iOS5 computability fixes”, and gamers could not be more upset. After the update, their ratings for To-Fu dropped from 4 1/2 stars down to 2 1/2. The developers have also been deleting FaceBook posts asking them about the updates, as well as not responding to their paying customers e-mails, as well as dropping off the face of Touch Arcade, which they were very active on before essentially stealing money from their customers (that’s what they did, right? Offering a paid version next to a free ad filled version, then pulling the ad filled version, and putting the ads into the paid version, then making the paid version free. Gamers had the option to pick up the free version, but instead, they opted to pay for the game, and in return, got the free version. Unless we’re missing something here, that’s essentially stealing).
You can voice your opinion on their FaceBook page, but they’ll just delete it. So go ahead, give the games a 1 star rating in the AppStore, and delete the games on your device. They don’t run like they use to anyway, having constant crashes, skewed gameplay, and the games are now stretched out to make room for the HUGE ads on the bottom of the screen. Watch out for To-Fu 2 to be updated in the near future as well, and keep HotGen on your DO NOT BUY FROM list. They seem to have gone CRAZY stupid.

Orange Pixel’s latest action platformer, INC, has just gone through a bug fixing update. It fixes many of the problems gamers were experiencing when first starting up the game, along with a couple others. The bugs where your character would just fall through the floor when you first started up the game, and players experiencing the no bullets issue have been fixed, as well as fixing the cloudsaving progress issues, and the bug where it would keep saying “Level Up” even after your character got to level 3, the highest level he can reach. This run’n’gun platformer is now fixed and ready to rock, so now you don’t have any reason to skip out on the amazing Orange Pixel’s latest title!
This exciting arcade game where you try and get as many ninjas across a ledge as you can has gained a small following of gamers since it’s release last month. Alien Worm, the development team, put together a small competition recently, giving gamers the opportunity to submit ideas for new hats to be put into the game. A couple of these ideas made it in, and are now in the version 1.05 build of this crazy game. 6 new hats have been added, as well as a new environment to play in. Be sure to snag this modern casual take on an old classic.
Blowup!!, the block matching/destroying arcade puzzle game from Cravemob has recently been updated as well. The 1.0.3 version contains 3 new songs, Twitter and Facebook support, bonus music tracks for levels that you 100% complete, some difficulty adjusting, and bug fixing. This addictive puzzle game is one that incorporates music into the gameplay quite well. If you’re a fan of music or puzzle games, this is one title you should really consider checking out.
-==FREEBIES==-
Most Triniti Games end up going free eventually. God of Fight is the most recent addition to their ‘gone free’ list. The game is basically a clone of Knights Rush, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Knights Rush is a great game. There are a couple of different gaming mechanics within God of Fight, enough to warrant a download while it’s free anyway. Be sure to grab it while you can!
Big Blue Bubble’s sequel to their popular title, Burn The Rope, Burn The Rope: Worlds, has just gone free. The biggest issue people had with the game was seeing the “Remove Ads” IAP. But what they didn’t realize is that the Ads are ONLY shown during the Daily Levels, not through the regular modes of the game, just like in the original title. Sales have suffered because gamers thought they would be paying for a game that had ads in it all the time. Hopefully going free will show people what they’ve been missing out on.
Fabrice Noui’s expanded take on Risk-type gameplay, Empires, has just gone free for thefirst time. This strategy game about conquest is one of the best Risk influenced games we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. If you’re a fan of the old-school game, or just a strategy fanatic, Empires is a game you shouldn’t miss out on!
4:20 Digital’s interesting arcade game, Chain Surfer, has also just gone free. See how many tricks you can do while rocking back n forth on a chain. Sound dull? We thought so too, until we actually tried it out. The addictive gameplay will have you coming back for more time and time again, trying to pull off more and more tricks, and trying to better your score while moving up the leaderboards. Snag this one while it’s free!
The Ikaruga inspired shoot-em-up by Vidia, Kyotokei – Polarity Shooter, has gone free for the first time since it’s release a month or two ago. The awesome old-school gameplay will probably having you longing for a real Ikaruga port for the iOS, but until shmup fanatics see that day, and probably have a heart-attack because of it, Kyotokei is a great substitute. You’ll fly around level after level, absorbing enemy bullets by changing your character’s color. It recently got updated with GameCenter, bringing the replay value up quite a bit too. If you’re a fan of shmups, Kyotokei is a game you NEED to have on your device, and now you can, for FREE!

Image & Form International’s popular line drawing/tower defense game, Anthill: TTD, has just gotten it’s Version 2.0 update. With it, comes the oh-so-cool Infinity Mode. You can now see how far you can make it in the world of ants while competing for scores in an insanely hectic up-the-difficulty every minute of gameplay Mode, and now you can snag it for just $0.99! Don’t miss your chance to grab one of , if not THE BEST, line drawing defense-strategy game available, to date.
Recently, Ayopa Games published two titles. W.E.L.D.E.R. is one of those two. Making it to the AppStore Game Of The Week, Ayopa has decided to drop the launch sale price of $1.99, down to $0.99! W.E.L.D.E.R. is easily one of the best word games to ever hit the AppStore, and was a steal at two bucks, but now, at $0.99, it’s officially hit the ‘must buy’ list for many gamers. Cascading match-3 type strategy gameplay mixed with crazy Scrabble game mechanics makes W.E.L.D.E.R. a game that just about anyone can enjoy, and get hooked on.

SEGA’s card-based strategic defense game, Samurai Bloodshow, has just gone on sale for $0.99! Now you can experience one of the most hardcore real-time defense games available for the iOS. Not only will you get a crazy long, 200 stage, campaign mode, but you’ll also be able to play multiplayer over wi-fi and through GameCenter! Battle it out with gamers around the globe, while collecting the best character cards you can! Definitely a great deal at the low price of $0.99!

Anthill: Tactical Trail Defense gets it’s INFINITY MODE update!

On October 9th of this year, Image & Form released their line drawing tower defense game, Anthill: Tactical Trail Defense. It’s one of the very few games that has gotten a perfect score here on The App Shack. The mix of strategic line drawing mixed with base defense took a hold of us and would not let go. Since the release, I&F have developed quite the following for their title, with over 3,000 iTunes reviews from around the globe giving them an average of 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. One of the most requested features has been a Survival or Infinite Mode, and with their 2.0 update, they’ve given it to us! Not only does it add a ton of replay value to the game, but it’ll test every player who has a copy of it, putting each and every one of us against each other in the GameCenter leaderboard for the mode. Not only can you go up against your friends, but you can see how you stack up against the best of the best. Yes, this is essentially what the level-by-level leaderboards did, but with an Infinite Mode, there’s no limit on the score you can get, and with the Mode getting progressively harder the longer you last, it’s a true test of skills. Be sure to update, or if you don’t have Anthill: TTD yet, you should get it while it’s on sale (for $1.99 at the moment! 66% off, and it’s UNIVERSAL!). You will not regret it.

Chicken Rescue Update

End Boss+Ayopa Games
Last week, we had the chance to review End Boss’s game, Chicken Rescue (published by Ayopa Games), and, even though it’s a great game for kids, had a couple of negative things to say about it. After we checked, it seemed that a lot of other players felt the same way about quite a few of the issues we brought up. Thankfully, End Boss and Ayopa listened, and have given gamers a much improved Chicken Rescue. Along with adding 20 new levels, they’ve given us a whole new virtual stick for controlling movement. The areas of the rock ramp and cart have been expanded, making it easier to use them and reach extra areas in the levels. More checkpoints in the later levels, a pulsing dash button, a new dashing tutorial, and to top everything off, performance improvements, making the game run smoother all around. We’re very excited to get back into the game, as all of the frame-rate issues, and lag that we came across here and there are gone, and the new joystick is a lot easier to use. This, along with the inclusion of extra checkpoints later on in the game and easier to use ramps should also make the game easier for children. So a big THANK YOU to End Boss and Ayopa for putting this update out so quickly after the release, and facing most of the issues that customers have brought up head on. We know that developers and publishing studios that do this are, these days, a kind of rarity, and nothing that we at The App Shack take for granted. Be sure to check out Chicken Rescue, available in the AppStore. Especially if you’ve got little ones!

New Updates!

Candy Boy
Candy Boy, the puzzle platformer by Colorbox has just gotten another update. This time they’ve improved the controls, and added a new Christmas level pack! The new level pack contains 20 new levels, and you can play it without beating the previous world. So this is a great new addition to the game, for both gamers who have and who have not beaten the full game yet. It’s great when developers get in the Christmas spirit a little early!
A couple months ago, we got the chance to review a swiping beat em up by the name of Kung-Fu Zombie Slaughter. In the game, you run around each level killing wave after wave of zombies, getting weapons as you progress in the game, and facing fiercer, quicker, and meaner enemies along the way. Version 1.1 has just recently gone live, and with it comes a few new features, though still no GameCenter, like we were hoping.
-Every zombie now has unique skills
-5 different enemy kinds
-Various bugfixes
So now each zombie has unique skills which you’ll have to learn fairly quickly in order to defeat them all, and a couple new zombies are thrown into the mix as well. Even though it’s no online leaderboard, it does add quite a bit of variety to the game, and it’s hard to complain about that.
About a week ago, we reviewed a new sci-fi/RTS game by the name of Blue Libra. A bit like Galcon, but with quite a bit of depth to it, Blue Libra has turned into one of our favorite strategy games here at The App Shack. Last night we were surprised with the Version 1.4 update hitting the AppStore. Here’s what’s been added;
–Extended campaign by additional maps
–Added zoom (two finger zooming gesture)
–Added retina support for battle (must be enabled in options)
–Added option for turning off/on screen movement during drawing movement path
–Fixed crash bug related to AI
We had a chance to check out the 1.4 version this morning, and the new zoom feature makes the game a lot easier to play by allowing gamers to see the entire level map at any time while playing. The new campaign levels are also a great addition, as are the new retina graphics. Definitely a nice update to an already great game.
The CB Labs platformer that was released at the end of September this year just got it’s very first update, and it’s one that a lot of players have been eagerly awaiting. Along with some bug fixes, you can now share your scores on FaceBook and Twitter. Though that’s not what players have been excited about. Timmy is now able to be controls with… LEFT AND RIGHT VIRTUAL CONTROLS! That’s right, no more finicky joystick movement here kiddies. CB Labs has given us some buttons, and they work extremely well. Be sure to snag this update quick, because those GameCenter scores are going to start shooting up now!
The new world game, W.E.L.D.E.R., by Highline Games, while still in it’s launch sale phase, has gotten an un-expected update, and quite a few things have been done to this awesome game.
–New “Word Quotas Completed” leaderboard: try to complete all 12 levels more times than your friends!
–Additional bonus swaps between levels: receive up to 8 extra swaps for your next level, if you’re REALLY good that is!
–Updated social messaging functions.
–Thanks for all your word suggestions! Keep sending suggestions to words@weldergame.com No proper nouns are allowed, and words without definitions are generally met with skepticism, but we welcome your feedback!
–Tap the new “?” in the Special Swaps area on iPhone (near bottom of screen) to see an explanation of all Special Swaps you currently have available.
–Fixed ‘Weld with Friends’ achievement.
