BioWare’s Next iOS game is Mass Effect: Infiltrator

This morning in the bustling city of New York, EA held a press conference where they announced the details of their plans for iOS. Apparently they are going to release a game called Mass Effect: Infiltrator which will tie into their upcoming game, Mass Effect 3.

This will be a iOS original game and EA claims that it will be a “fully- featured iOS third-person shooter” and feature “stunning graphics and authentic weapons and powers from the Mass Effect series“.

The story revolves around you saving prisoners from a hostile Cerberus base and by finding evidence of Cerberus’ crimes you can gain rewards which seem to be integrated with Mass Effect multiplayer. Quote:

“Every completed rescue and intelligence discovery in Infiltrator will increase a player’s Galactic Readiness rating directly through the ‘Galaxy at War’ system in Mass Effect 3.”

The major controversial feature for me is going to be the UI and the controls. I don’t doubt that the game itself will be awesome, but the implementation of the controls can make or break a game.

What do you think about the game? Are you disappointed that a full Mass Effect game hasnt been ported or feel that a iOS exclusive game is the way to go with the series. Let us know in the comments below.

Prevail Gameplay Emerges – Epic Adventures Await

A while back we heard that Johnny Two Shoes, the geniuses behind Plunderland, were hard at work on a huge new iOS game.  The game I’m talking about is Prevail, and from the details we have so far, this game will be mind blowing. Expect a true ‘open-universe’ where you can act on your every whim. Bring destruction or peace to neighboring planet colonies and explore the ends of the universe. Also, in no way is this a Pocket God style game.  Johnny Two Shoes is giving us the real deal here and the game can be better described as a 2D GTA set in outer space. Take a look at the newly released gameplay trailer. Your mind will asplode.

The League of Evil 2 Trailer Rocks!

There isn’t much to say about League of Evil other than that it is pretty much the most amazing platformer on iOS. Back at the start of 2012 we gave our Game of the Year award to the original League of Evil. After having so much fun with the first, you can’t imagine how excited we are (or at least I am) for the sequel! Enough chit chat, feast your eyes on the glorious trailer. Agent is back. Oh yeah.

Hunters 2 Is Shaping Up To Be More Than A Sequel

A year ago, Rodeo Games made their iOS debut with the release of Hunters: Episode One.  Their free-to-try turn-based strategy title set a new standard in terms of graphics and gameplay.  Since then, Hunters: Episode One has received over 600,000 downloads and has earned a Metacritic rating of 84%.  Coming off of this initial success, Rodeo Games is following up with the second installment in the Hunters series.  Hunters 2 looks to expand on the gameplay of the first episode, and will even feature a full campaign mode.  This campaign will follow the story of a brand new hero, Caius Black.

All in all, Hunters 2 is looking really good so far. I’m sure fans will love the new campaign mode, not to mention the new enemies races, environments, mission types, guns, and gear. On top of that, a new graphics engine will be used to handle real-time dynamic lighting and various customization options.
At the moment, Hunters 2 is about to enter the beta stage. If all goes well we should have our hands on the game in no time.  We’ll let you know as soon as we hear more info about the game. Until then, go ahead and check out the promo screens below and Rodeo Games’ website and sign up for their beta program if you want.

‘Terra Noctis: Free Dreaming’ – Interesting Free2Play Model

Recently Bulkypix teamed up with Everplay and FireFruitForge to bring Terra Noctis onto the App Store. Terra Noctis had pretty much anything you could ask for in a classic style platformer, and after playing through the game I had nothing but good things to say about it. Despite a feature on Apple’s ‘New and Noteworthy’ games, Terra Noctis hasn’t faired well so the devs are taking a new approach.

On February 2nd, a free to play version of Terra Noctis will go live on the App Store. This version will be released by Everplay Interactive without the Bulkypix branding.  Now it is important to note here that the original premium version of Terra Noctis will go untouched. Just think of this new version as the ‘lite’ or demo.

Here’s what to expect. First things first, there will be no shortage of HATS whatsoever. Of course this is great news because with hats comes increased replay value. There will also be epic items to unlock as well.  The devs would like to stress that the IAP in the game will be completely optional. You will have access to the game in its entirety for free, but if you want to speedily unlock the hats, then you will need to throw down a few coins. I believe this model will work well, and if it is well accepted by the community then we will definitely be seeing future updates to both versions of Terra Noctis.
In terms of actual gameplay, Free Dreaming will play pretty much like its premium older brother. Apparently a few tweaks have been made to make the game more hardcore, so don’t expect this to be a cheasy one and done deal.

Other than that there isn’t much to say about Terra Noctis: Free Dreaming. I’m excited to see the devs making this effort and I hope it works well for everyone. Either way expect to find the game on the App Store this Thursday, February 2nd. Now let there be hats for everyone. Here’s a video:

Kids vs. Goblins delayed, but will be Universal

As you may have grasped from our posts about it, we can’t wait till Kids vs. Goblins comes out. It is basically a line drawing strategy game with fantasy elements.  The game was originally pegged for a release this Thursday, but it was decided that they would take a little extra time to make it Universal and optimize it for the smaller screen.

Stolen Couch, the developers of KvG announced this through their Twitter

“Kids vs Goblins will be delayed by a little bit. Don’t be sad! Be glad! The game will now be universal!”

If you want more details about what the game is about you can check out our previous article here.

Call of Cthulu: The Wasted Land and Shogun coming tonight!

We have been looking forward to both of these releases and were caught off guard when they appeared in the NZ AppStore this morning.  Call of Cthulu: The Wasted Land is a turnbased strategy/ action roleplaying game set in World War I. Shogun is a classic bullet hell shoot em up inspired by Japanese arcade games. Both will come out at 11:00 p.m. U.S. time.  Here is the info from each respective iTunes page:

Call of Cthulu: The Wasted Land
$4.99
[Universal]

Writers Wanted! No EXP. Required

The site is currently running a two man shift which isn’t hardly enough to keep you happy with all the latest in iOS news.  That is why we are now opening three new writer slots to anyone who wishes to apply.  Here are the benefits of working with us and what you would be doing.

  • FREE iOS games from all sorts of developers such as Crescent Moon Games, Telltale Media, and Ravenous Games.
  • No deadlines. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to write something up then its no problem at all. We do ask that you post at a reasonable rate though.
  • NO Experience required. All we ask is that you have a understanding of the English Language, Grammar and how to form complete sentences.
  • Cover what you want to. We don’t force you to write anything about a certain subject. Got a game you want to review? Go for it!
  • We provide you with your own email address so that you can contact developers in a professional manner and ask if you can write a review of their game.
We need two game reviewers and one news reporter.  The game reviewers would obviously review new games and the news reporter would report on interesting tidbits in the iOS community.  News reports generally take less time than reviews so it would be perfect if you have a constantly busy schedule.

Contact me at TheAppShack@gmail.com and let me know if you are interested. Also please specify if you would like to be a reviewer or a news reporter.

Telltale Media starts New Year’s sale a little late

Telltale Media joins the price slashing celebration a little bit too late as all of the other games previously on sale are no longer available for the lower price.  In my opinion this is a smart move because there is no other competition and it will be easier for the game to rise up in the ranks.  Here is the list of the price drops:

Coming Tonight – Soul Calibur, JAZZ, Ash II: Shadows and tons more!

The App Store is finally starting to pick up speed and tonight the flood gates are opening as tons of quality titles are launching simultaneously. Check out the fine selection below.

Soul Calibur – $12.99 [Universal]

Soul Calibur is the port of the 1999 Dreamcast version of the game and is debuting to the tune of thirteen dollars.  Though the typical Apple gamer may balk at the price tag, fans of the fighting series are probably mashing the buy button as it releases around the world.

JAZZ: Trump’s Journey – $2.99 [Universal]

Set in New Orleans during the era of jazz music, JAZZ certainly seems to embody how the city looked like back then. With a unique musical twist this platformer certainly looks like a great time. Check out our review of it here: http://www.the-app-shack.com/2012/01/jazz-trumps-journey-299-bulkypix-egg.html

Ash II: Shadows – Silver ($2.99) Gold ($4.99) [Universal]

The popular JRPG Ash, now has a sequel which is surprisingly published by Konami. There are two versions called Silver and Gold. Apparently Silver gets you half off all future content updates presumably available by iAP. Gold, while being a bit more expensive, promises free content updates forever.

Time of Heroes – $0.99 [Universal]

Looks like an interesting turn-based combat game with an interesting story.  Coming from Smuttlewerk studios, we are sure this is a top of the line game.

Niko – $1.99 [Universal]

Free to try platformer with full game unlock for $1.99. Looks like it differentiates itslef from the other platformers with an unique control system.

Puzzlejuice – $2.99 [Universal]

Another of the many word game that have been taking the Appstore by storm over the past few weeks. From the description it seems like a combination of Bejewled, Tetris, and Spell Tower. Certainly looking forward to this one.

Also a number of other releases came out earlier today before the massive rush. Here are the ones that looked worthwhile to download:

Caverns of Minos – $1.99 [Universal]

Coming from the master of retro games, Llamasoft, this will tide you over till the rest of the releases come out and probably for the rest of your weekend! Just got it and am really loving it so far.

OVERTURN – $3.99 [iPhone only]

(Footage of Wii version)
Adapted from the Wii to the touchscreen interface, Overturn certainly looks like an interesting game.  My only worry is that the controls may not be the best. Other than that looks great!

Now it’s your turn to have your voice heard! Let us know in the comments which of these games you would like to win and we will try to secure a code for you. First person to ask for a specific game gets it IF we receive the code. You are more likely to win if the game is not as well known or from indie developers. One entry per person.
