True Axis’ Jet Car Stunts goes UNIVERSAL!

One of the very first games I ever bought for my 2nd Generation iPod Touch was True Axis’ Jet Car Stunts. Released in November of 2009, it’s gone through quite a few updates, but none of them have been as highly anticipated as the Version 1.5.0 update which hit the AppStore late last night.
Jet Car Stunts now runs at a solid 60 Frames-Per-Second and includes Full Screen Anti-Aliasing for smooth edges on the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3. This is all to help make the main reason for the update even better. Jet Car Stunts is now UNIVERSAL. That’s right, you can now play JCS in native resolution on the iPad!
If you’ve yet to check out Jet Car Stunts, you should know that it won Apple’s Best Game of 2009, was TouchGen’s biggest surprise of 2009, was Touch Arcade’s best iPhone and iPod Touch game in 2009, as well as receiving numerous other awards and rankings. The game has 36 incredibly well designed tracks, and 3 separate gameplay modes; Platforming, Time Trial and Ghost Racing. It’s been one of my favorite games since I first got into iOS gaming, and now, with this recent update, I’m looking forward to playing through it all again on my iPad. Be sure you check this one out, it’s a fantastic mix of racing, platforming, and flying, and offers up an insane amount of replayability.

Mikey Shorts; A new platformer coming this summer!

About a year ago, on the Touch Arcade Forums, I got involved in the GameCenter boards for Mos Speedrun with a couple of other players. Much to my surprise, a couple of those players went off, and created their own development studio, BeaverTap Games, and now they’re getting wildly close to the release of their own plat former, Mikey Shorts. Lucky me, I’ve been helping to beta test the game, and when I asked the crew if I could post up some pre-release images and share a little bit of info, they were happy to let me. So here it is.
Mikey Shorts is a sort of casual speed run plat former. The times for 3 staring each level are not as strict as they are in, say, League of Evil, Mos Speedrun, or many other speed run plat formers out there now. There are also no enemies. That’s right. No enemies at all. But that doesn’t mean that you won’t be running into little creatures that you can destroy. Throughout each of the levels there are tons of little robots which you can either destroy or use to jump off of and reach higher platforms. It’s a great little gameplay mechanic, and really does come in handy later on in the game.
The gameplay, like most titles in the genre, is fairly simple, but with it’s simplicity, and the amazing level designs, can get very challenging. You’re given left/right buttons, a jump button, and a slide button. With the slide button, you’re able to slide into the robots, destroying them, as well as slide under paths in the levels, which you wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise. This constant running, jumping and sliding is all centered around collecting statues of Mikey. In order to pass through each of the levels checkpoints, you’ll need to collect all of the statues between them. They are usually set up on one path from point A to B, but the addition of the enemies, as well as coins, throughout the levels, branching off on separate paths, will have you needing to quickly decide if you want to try and collect all the coins you can, or get to the end of the level as fast as you can. It kind of reminds me of Hypership Out Of Control, with the coins leading you right into a wall at high speeds. Same thing here.
Mikey Shorts is full of content, including 24 main levels split up between 6 worlds, 48 challenge levels, and an insane amount of unlockable cosmetic features which you can dress Mikey up with. It’ll be Universal, priced at $0.99, and hit the AppStore sometime this summer. We’ll get more information as the release date approaches, but until then, check out the screens, and the sneak peak video.

Rubicon’s Great Little War Game goes free for a limited time in celebration of the upcoming release of Great Big War Game!

One of the best Turn-Based Strategy titles available for the iOS, Rubicon’s Great Little War Game, has just gone free for a limited time to celebrate the upcoming release of the sequel, Great Big War Game. If you haven’t had the pleasure of playing GLWG yet, now would be the perfect time to find out why it’s held in such high regard by many iOS gamers. Packed with an absolutely wonderful single player campaign mode, a great skirmish mode, pass and play local MP mode, 4 difficulty settings, GameCenter integration, and loads upon loads of replay value, it’s a must have for fans of the genre.
Coming this Thursday, Great Big War Game, has much of the same, but more. The biggest addition will have to be the massive amount of extra Skirmish Mode Maps, and the out-of-this-world online Asynchronous Multiplayer Mode. Be sure to check back on Thursday, when we post up our review of this incredibly anticipated new title. Until then, loose yourself in the game that got many a gamer into the strategy genre, for free!

Rik Schennink’s missile defense title, Eve of Impact, goes Universal and Newtype’s Aerial Combat game, Fractal Combat gets a graphic makeover!

Eve of Impact, the fantastic missile defense title from Rik Schennink, has just been updated to Version 1.3.0. What’s included in this update you ask? One of the most requested features, that’s what! iPad support! That’s right, Eve of Impact is now a Universal app, and you can view this amazingly beautiful title in full resolution on the big(er) screen.
That’s not all (tell em what they’ve won, Jon!), iPhone retina graphics have been tweaked, and the gameplay is now a little more strategic. In previous versions, every asteroid on the screen was heading directly for Earth. But now, there are various asteroids which are not on a direct collision course for the planet. This should help scores rise and game length increase quite a bit.
Eve of Impact has been my favorite Missile Defense title since it was released. Hopefully in the future more modes will be added, but right now, priced at $0.99, it’s one game that has the extreme potential to never leave your iDevice. If you’d like to know more, check out our 4 star review, watch the trailer, check out these screens, and head on over to the AppStore and discover one it’s best kept secrets.
Also recently updated, and definitely worth mentioning. Newtype’s amazing aerial combat title, Fractal Combat, just got a graphic makeover, faster gameplay, new sound tracks, and iCloud support! The first time I laid my eyes on the screen shots for Fractal Combat, I knew I had to have it. Once I got it, I knew I was addicted. The aerial combat is some of the best I’ve seen on the iOS, even, in my opinion, better than Sky Gamblers. If you haven’t bought Fractal Combat yet, you should. It’s got some great developer support, with on-going updates, each time making the game even better, is Universal, and has the insanely low price of only $0.99, when it could easily have a price-tag of $4.99.
Check out our 4.5 star review, watch the trailer, and, like Eve of Impact, jump over to the AppStore and PICK UP THIS AMAZING HIDDEN GEM!! You won’t regret it.

FDG’s iPad only Real-Time Strategy title Tentacle Wars is coming to the iPhone!!

Back in April, we posted our review of the FDG publication, Lumarama’s Tentacle Wars HD. Right now, Tentacle Wars is only available for the iPad, however, next Thursday, the 19th, Tentacle Wars will be released for the iPhone and iPod Touch. That’s right, you small-screen gamers will finally be able to see what all the fuss is about with this Galconesque Real-Time Strategy title.
Back in our review, we gave Tentacle Wars HD a rating of 4 1/2 Stars out of 5, praising the challenging gameplay and multiplayer mode, as well as it’s GameCenter integrated score-chasing aspects. If you’re a fan of Galcon, or just looking for a quick pick-up-and-play RTS title, Tentacle Wars is a game that will definitely be right at home on your device, and in your pocket.

Be sure and check out FDG’s trailer for the game, and get ready to experience the challenging gameplay this upcoming Thursday! Don’t miss out!

FireFruit Forge+Everplay’s Arena-Platformer/RPG Goes FREE For a limited time!

FireFruitForge and Everplay, developers of the fantastic retro-platformer Terra Noctis, released their second collaboration game, Spellsword, an arena platformer like Super Crate Box with an RPG influence, back in April of this year. Even though we had some problems with the way the two development teams handled the issues that came along with Terra Noctis, an update was FINALLY sent in, and the way that the teams have handled the issues with Spellsword have totally reaffirmed my faith that Everplay, and possibly F.F.F., are here to stay, and that the iOS world is that much better because of that fact.
If you haven’t had a chance to grab Spellsword yet, now would be your chance, as it’s gone free with the popular Free App A Day service to help support the release of Everplay’s new CO-OP dual-stick zombie shooter, Left2Die. If you’re a fan of platformers, or RPG titles, get ready to have hours upon hours of your life sucked away with this fantastic title. It includes iCade support, as well as being Universal, and having GameCenter integration with leaderboards for the endless levels and loads of achievements. Don’t let yourself miss out on this one, even being unsure if the game would receive updates when it first came out, and not being too trusting of Everplay or Fire Fruit Forge, the game managed to shoot up my favorites list, and completely took over my gaming world for the couple weeks after it’s release. Check the vid below for some in-game scenes, click the ‘Download on iTunes’ icon below to be taken to the AppStore and get this game. You won’t be disappointed.

Angry Birds Seasons Goes FREE!!!

Angry Birds is easily one of the most popular iOS games to ever hit the AppStore. Since it’s release, it’s been downloaded millions of times, and had 3 sequels; Seasons, Rio, and Space. It’s resulted in thousands of physics based puzzlers, and clones and basically pushed the genre into the hands of casual and hardcore gamers alike. Well now, if for whatever reason, you don’t yet have Angry Birds Seasons, you can pick the game up for free. That’s right. FREE. Both the iPhone and iPad versions of the game have just gone free as Apple’s App Of The Week. So be sure and pick this one up if you don’t already have it, or weren’t wanting to double dip after getting a new iPad or iPhone, and already having one version. It just might wind up turning you into a closet Angry Birds fan. Don’t worry, we won’t tell. 😉

Explodables Lite!

Explodables, one of our favorite high-score chasing arcade titles here at The App Shack, developed by Mark Peach, definitely hasn’t gotten the attention that it deserves. Finely tuned, driven by an exceptional scoring system and accompanied by fantastic graphics, Explodables is one of the few titles to get a perfect 5 out of 5 score in our review. Well, now you can check out the game for yourself, and see why we’re so impressed with this title by downloading the newly released Explodables Lite.
In it, you’re able to play through 6 stages, and take on the exclusive to the lite version gameplay mode, Time Blast, which has you trying to get through 5 stages in the shortest time possible, getting the highest score you can. It’s definitely one of the best tap-based arcade titles available for the iOS, and one that everyone should have on their device.
