Another World – 4.99 (Bulkypix)

Another World is a re-release of the old Amiga game by Eric Chahi, released this time by Bulkypix. Bulkypix has put out a lot of great games over the last couple years, but with this release of Another World, their uber cool status pretty much just shot through the roof. Another World is a classic game from the 90’s where you guide a physicist, who has been sucked into a strange world, through various puzzles and action sequences.

Most gamers who are familiar with the game will probably, first off, want to know how it controls on the touch screen. We’re given two options for control, a d-pad with an action button, or swipe/tap controls. The swipe/tap controls seem to work the best, as they feel more natural for the game on a touch screen. You’ll tap on either side of the screen to move in that direction, while swiping up or down to jump and duck, and then have two action buttons, one in each bottom corner.
The graphics have also been updated to fit the current devices perfectly, getting a very nice make-over. The environments are now a lot more detailed, as well as all the enemies and cut-scenes. You can, however, drag two fingers down on the screen at any point in the game to switch back to the classic graphics. It’s interesting seeing how much they’ve improved in certain spots by switching back and forth between the graphics, a lot of the environments look totally re-done.
Now for the game. Those of you who have played through, and beat, Another World, know that it’s a very short game, but only if you know exactly what to do to get through all the puzzles. This is definitely one of those games that if you look up a play through on YouTube, it will take, pretty much, all the fun and discovery out of the game. For first timers, or people who have never played all the way through the game, it could take 5 or 6 hours, maybe even longer, depending on how much you die, to complete it.
The puzzles and gameplay are mixed in with cinematic elements, so it’s sometimes hard to know exactly when the gameplay starts. The first time I played I died in the first 10 seconds because I didn’t know you were supposed to make your character swim out from the water. I’ve also sat there wondering if I was controlling the characters, or if I was watching another cut scene. So it’s a real story based adventure game, with tons of puzzles, and platform elements. Most of the puzzles will require multiple deaths while checking out the “wrong ways” to accomplish something, while other times, you might just end up stumbling onto the solution without even knowing it. Luckily, there’s a nice checkpoint system, so you’ll only need to start back a couple of screens if you die. There’s also 3 different difficulty levels, one easier than the original, the original, and a harder difficulty, for those of you who have made it through the game already, and consider yourselves pros.
Another World was an amazing game when it was released back in 1991, and with the amount of old-school gamers that play games on iPods, I don’t think Buklypix will have any problem selling this masterpiece. It’s still as great now as it was then, but because it was so original and ground-breaking at the time of release, causing even old-school gamers to want to pull their hair out, a lot of younger gamers will probably not enjoy this one too much. But if you’re serious about playing a game that’s still like no other, and ready to experience a game rather than play it, Another World is a great choice. It will stick with you, possibly forever. I can still remember playing this on my neighbors Mac about 17 years ago, and still consider it to be one of the most interesting, and engrossing games of my childhood. I feel lucky to be able to play it all over again on my iPod with controls that fit the system very well, with re-done graphics and sounds, and at a fraction of the cost of the original. $4.99, and being Universal, Another World does have an AppStore “premium” price, but it’s a premium game, even with it’s low re-playability, high difficulty, and chances that you’ll get stuck on one or two screens of the game for a day or two at a time, it’s a game that will make it’s mark on you. If you remember the game from your childhood, love old-school games, or are looking for something to totally blow you away, this is definitely a game to snag.

HECTOR: Ep2 – Senseless Acts of Justice – 4.99 (Telltale Inc)

The long awaited sequel to HECTOR: Badge of Carnage Ep1 [$3.99] is finally upon us! HECTOR: Ep2 – Senseless Acts of Justice [$4.99] is the second episode of the humorous trilogy. I’ve actually never gotten the chance to play the first episode, shocker right! Since I haven’t played the first episode I can’t really compare them to which one’s the best. If you’re new to the series like me then you ought to know who the main characters are. The game follows Detective Hector and his assistant Lambert throughout the series. The Hector: Badge of Carnage series is a point-and-click adventure game where you have to interact with people and objects to complete your tasks. There’s a lot of silly crude humor, so this game isn’t for the young. It’s also not for people who don’t have a sense of humor. So, if you were born without that then you should probably stay far away from this game. I mean it. Even though this is a funny game it’ll require you

to use your brain every now and then to complete the task on hand. The controls are very simple. Just tap anywhere to move around. To interact with objects and people just tap once to do so. If you need to use an item then just double tap to use it. You can gather objects and store them into your inventory. Sometimes you’ll have to combine objects that you’re carrying to get the job done. Throughout the game you can switch back and forth between Hector and Lambert to perform the various duties. If you’re ever stuck, then you can use the hint menu, but I’m afraid to use it… it makes me feel dumb, because of how easy some of the tasks are. There’s not much more I can say about the game without spoiling the story. After playing HECTOR: Ep2 – Senseless Acts of Justice, I’ve found myself to truly love the series. I definitely need to go pick up the first game ASAP! If you’re new to the Badge of Carnage series like me then I suggest you go play the first one 
before you play this one. You don’t really have to though. You’ll be fine by just hopping into episode 2, but if you would like to know the main plot then you should just start of at #1. Also, if you’ve played the first one before then there’s no way in the world that you can’t pick up this one. Come on for Pete’s sake! It’s Hector!!!! Overall, the dialogue in this game is fantastic and it’s hilarious. The graphics are nicely done and everything seems to flow very well. HECTOR: Ep2 – Senseless Acts of Justice is definitely worth $5… probably more! My final rating is 5 out of 5 stars. If your looking for a great puzzle adventure game and a nice long game then HECTOR: Ep2 – Senseless Acts of Justice for [$4.99] is definitely worth your time and hard earned money. Have an iPad? iBlast Moki 2 – 2.99/4.99 (HD) (Godzilab)

iBlast Moki needs no real introduction, the physics-puzzle game from Godzilab is one of the most popular on the iOS, snagging the #2 game spot of all time on metacritic. So when iBlast Moki 2 was announced, everyone was eagerly anticipating this sequel, and for good reason. In iBlast Moki, you use bombs and other items to get Moki’s into the portal at the end of each level. The physics are amazing, the level design is top notch, and the environments are varied, and extremely vibrant. The sequel includes even more kinds of bombs and items to help the Moki’s reach the portals, the same amazing physics, even more interesting level design, and more vibrant environments, and it takes advantage of retina and HD display. There’s also a level editor and a level sharing service thrown in for endless hours of entertainment and fun.

In iBlast Moki 2, you’ll encounter some very interesting bombs, and you don’t need to play for hours to get into the new game mechanics. They are thrown at you almost from the beginning. Paint bombs that each have different characteristics, ropes, and balloons are some of the first you’ll see. There’s also objects that you can stick your Moki’s to in order to get them to the portals at the end of the levels. In the game, it’s your job to place bombs throughout the levels, and set them to go off at specific times in order to fling the Moki’s to the end while collecting all the flowers in each stage, and doing it as fast as you can. Your regular bombs are the ones that you’ll really have to play with trial and error getting the timing just right, making them explode at just the right time to send your characters off in another direction. This is done easily because the level resets every time you press the stop button in the lower left corner. The paint bombs, however, are more about where you place them, and timing isn’t really an issue with these. You’re given red, green, and orange bombs. The red acts as a bouncy liquid, and once your characters or any other objects touch it, they bounce up into the air. Green bombs act as glue, making your characters stick to whatever objects get covered in the liquid when the bomb goes off, and orange bombs act as turbo speed bombs, drawing your Moki to them, and shooting them forward at faster speeds.
Because iBlast Moki 2 is a physics-puzzle game, the physics are a huge part of it, and Godzilab has done an amazing job with them. Everything feels real, and sometimes it might seem like you’ll have to be a physics major in order to get the solutions on the first or second time through the level. I actually would not be surprised if Godzilab had some physics majors help them with this aspect of the game, as they’re done so perfectly. This, coupled with the superb level design, add a ton to the challenge of getting up on the high-score board that’s in-game in the pause menu. The top 3 scores for each level are shown, and if you’d like, you can pay 1 Moki coin, which you earn throughout the game, to see these top solutions. This, is something that’s already upsetting people. Some gamers work for hours on a level trying to get the best score they can, and then their solution, if one of the best, is saved to the server, and accessible to everyone for 1 Moki coin. Godzilab has commented on this issue, and said that they will come up with a fix for it in a future update, but until then, the best solutions for each level are there, ready to be seen by everyone, unless you play offline. This is the only bad issue I can find with iBlast Moki 2 though.
With 90 levels spread across 6 different environments, and a level editor that lets you share and download created levels, there’s pretty much endless gameplay. A cut-throat leaderboard helps immensely with the replay value, and like I’ve said, some people will spend hours with one level, and some might even spend weeks creating one. iBlast Moki 2 could very well end up being the best puzzle game in 2011, maybe even the best puzzle game for the iOS, period. The scoring mechanics are great, the graphics are cute and polished, physics are perfect, level design is mind bending, and the gameplay is endless. For $3, it’ll be pretty much impossible to find a better puzzle game out there. It’s highly recommended to fans of the genre, and new-comers to the scene alike, and is on sale for launch, so you can grab it now for a buck! The universal version is $3, and should shoot up to $5 soon. If you don’t have it yet, make sure you get it soon, because it’s going to be a game that you end up buying eventually after hearing everyone you know talk about it.
I’m giving iBlast Moki 2 a score of 5/5, with a strong recommendation to get it now.
